Darcy

* * *

Darcy hummed a tune as she navigated her truck through traffic, occasionally stealing glances at the woman in the passenger's seat. She could still feel the glow in her chest from Ella’s lips on her and even though she never experienced this feeling before, she knew exactly what it meant. Even the steady beat of her heart was saying it.

Mate. Mate. Mate.

She wondered if every other mated person in her family had felt so sure before they went to Crescent Lake to reveal the blessings of fate from the Moon Goddess or if it was just her.

"Turn right here," Ella said abruptly.

Darcy quickly twisted her steering wheel and bumped up the curb like she'd only got her driving licence yesterday. A quick glance confirmed that they'd reached the furniture store and she parked haphazardly, leaving enough space to unload the big stump.

Before she could say something about it, Ella was already getting out. It was obvious that she was trying to avoid a conversation and Darcy wasn’t entirely sure why things felt less certain after they kissed than before.

She hopped out of the driver’s seat and joined Ella by the back of the truck. "You got a trolley or something to move the stump inside?"

"Inside, I'll get it," Ella said.

Despite her best intentions, Darcy couldn't help but watch Ella walk away and admire the swing of her hips. It was mesmerising and Darcy wondered what the next step for them was. Was she supposed to invite Ella to the next Crescent Moon ceremony with her or was it better to take it easy and get to know her a bit more?

A worry grabbed hold of her heart. What if this kiss meant nothing to Ella? What if this warm feeling inside her chest was just a trick from fate? Darcy picked at the skin of her fingers while she waited, her usual bravado and confidence suddenly gone. She didn't notice that Ella had returned until the other woman stopped in front of her with a rattling flatbed trolley.

"Will this do?" Ella asked as she locked the wheels in place.

"Yes, that’ll work." Darcy turned away, the worries still playing on her mind. She cleared her throat, trying to get her head back into the game. Doubts or not, she still had a job to do. "I’ll lower the ramp and push the log out. You might want to stand clear.”

"Yeah, good call. I don't want to get flattened in my parking lot,” Ella said, chuckling awkwardly as she moved herself and the trolley out of the danger zone.

Still lost in thought, Darcy climbed up on the truck bed and got behind the stump. The thick bark was rough against her hands as she summoned her inner bear strength and pushed with all her might. The log rolled down the ramp with a loud clatter and came to a pause on the stone floor.

"Nice." Ella rolled the trolley back and positioned it against the stump.

After a bit more manoeuvring, pushing, and groaning, Darcy managed to get the log onto the trolley.
